It is extremely unfortunate that the European Union is described as a "garden" and the rest of the world as a "jungle". This statement is nothing more than the "us and the barbarians" narrative of the colonial era.
Axar.az reports that Hikmet Hajiyev, the assistant to the President of Azerbaijan - Head of the Department of Foreign Policy Affairs of the Presidential Administration, shared this in his account on the "X" social network in response to the statements of the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for foreign affairs and security policy, Joseph Borrell.
"Small island developing states, as well as overseas regions of EU member states, suffer greatly from climate change. However, overseas regions deprived of self-governance cannot express their concerns and are ignored. At COP29, Azerbaijan provides an inclusive platform for every voice to be heard .EU membership does not confer the privilege of maintaining neo/colonial rule and rejecting the concept of decolonization, and it should be noted that some of the EU member countries have a deplorable colonial rule and a shameful slave trade experience," the post said.
According to him, Azerbaijan was highly appreciated by the international community as the organizer of COP29. However, it is completely unacceptable for the EEAS to send instructions to EU member states not to participate in COP29.
"In the same way, some EU countries tried to dissuade other countries from participating in COP29 using diplomatic channels. By doing this, you tried to disrupt the COP process. But all these attempts failed. More than 80 heads of state and government participated in COP. More than 70,000 participants have registered. I just want to remind you that the COP process belongs to the UN and the world," H. Hajiyev wrote.
"Despite all these ineffective attacks, Azerbaijan, as the organizer and chairman of the COP29, will continue to do everything possible to ensure the inclusiveness of the COP and to work constructively with the parties to achieve the expected results in the global climate agenda," the post emphasized.
