The European Union (EU) is considering a phased approach to suspending sanctions on Syria, aiming to support the country's transition following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
Axar.az, citing Euronews, reports that EU foreign ministers are set to discuss this plan, which includes suspending sanctions related to energy and transport while maintaining measures against the Assad regime and arms embargoes.
The proposed suspension would be gradual and could be reversed if conditions deteriorate. Some EU member states advocate for swift suspension to aid Syria's reconstruction and humanitarian efforts, while others emphasize retaining leverage over the new authorities. The EU's strategy aims to balance support for Syria's transition with the need to maintain pressure on the new government.
