Today, the Caspian Sea, unfortunately, is facing several serious environmental problems. One of the most pressing issues is the rapid decline in water levels, their shallowing, which poses both ecological and economic threats. At the VI Caspian Summit in 2022, I raised the issue of the violation of the ecological balance in the Caspian Sea. Unfortunately, since then, the situation has worsened. The water level in the Caspian Sea is rapidly decreasing, and the reasons are not limited to climate change alone.
Axar.az reports that this was stated by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in an interview with Kazinform Agency on the eve of his state visit to Kazakhstan.
“In the current conditions, it is very important to establish close cooperation between all Caspian littoral countries, actively exchange scientific information, and develop coordinated measures to eliminate the consequences. The decline in the level of the Caspian Sea and the related ecological changes threaten biodiversity and the stability of the ecosystem, and require coordinated measures to protect nature and restore ecological balance,” the head of state said.
The President noted that Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and other Caspian littoral states can and should actively promote initiatives to protect the Caspian Sea in regional and international forums:
“Against the backdrop of growing transnational environmental risks, the Caspian is no longer just a water body and is becoming a symbol of our shared responsibility and the need for joint action.”
