Within the framework of the “Fly to Baku. Art Weekend. Sense the Future NOW” project, an inclusive dance performance entitled “How Much is Enough?” was presented at the Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theater.
Axar.az reports that the initiator of the “Art Weekend” project, Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Founder and Director of IDEA Public Union, Leyla Aliyeva, participated in the event.
The theater-dance performance prepared by the “DanceAbility Azerbaijan” team was an artistic response to the environmental and social challenges of our time.
Created in the context of holding COP29 in Baku in 2024, this performance explores the impact of our daily choices, from the clothes we buy to the waste we produce, on the state of the planet and the future of humanity.
Nigar Sultanova, Director of “DanceAbility Azerbaijan”, said that the idea of the performance arose in the wake of public attention to climate change and environmental issues, which became the main theme of 2024.
“We always promote the idea of inclusivity and accessibility, but this time we decided to talk about the environment. It was important for us to do it honestly, so for six months we met with our troupe and discussed what caring for the planet means to us,” he emphasized.
The idea was based on the participants’ personal stories about the items they had carefully preserved over the years.
While researching the problem, the DanceAbility Azerbaijan team learned that approximately 92 million tons of textile waste are generated worldwide each year, and that people wear 36 percent less clothing on average than before. This is what inspired the team to create the performance “How Much is Enough?”, dedicated to consumer culture and sustainable development.
The performance explores the relationship between humans, consumption, and water, one of the planet’s most important resources.
Through movement, storytelling, and collective memory, the performance reveals the interrelationship between overconsumption, pollution, and the health of the oceans, promoting the ideas of sustainable development and a circular economy.
At the end of the event, Nigar Sultanova expressed her gratitude to the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and Leyla Aliyeva for the support and creation of conditions for the realization of the project, which brought together professional and amateur dancers, people with different abilities and experiences.
It should be noted that the company “DanceAbility Azerbaijan”, established in 2017, has contributed to building a society that values diversity, equality, and inclusion by having a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of people for many years.
