Ombudsman raises child safety concerns

Recently, cases of aggressive behavior by children towards their peers and other persons and violations of the law have been a cause for serious concern.

Axar.az reports that these thoughts were included in the statement of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Ombudsman) regarding negative incidents involving children.

It was noted that assessing the psychological state of children, monitoring their behavior, including their use of digital platforms, is of particular importance in terms of protecting the health and safety of children and society in general:

"The appeal of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Ombudsman) on the safety of children in the digital environment provided information based on an analytical analysis on the risks posed by online games and interactive platforms, especially the "Roblox" platform, which has become widespread among children in recent years. Relevant state bodies were invited to strengthen control mechanisms over online platforms, conduct a legal assessment of risks, and take necessary measures in the field of preventive activities to ensure the digital safety of children."

The statement emphasized that parents also play an undeniable role in eliminating the problems mentioned, and that they are responsible for the upbringing, health, and mental, physical, and moral development of their children.

The Ombudsman also touched upon the media representatives' interviewing of students and coverage of the information regarding the incident that occurred at the "Idrak" high school:

"Once again, I remind media representatives of the requirements of the laws "On Media" and "On Children's Rights", the "Code of Ethical Conduct of Azerbaijani Journalists" and other legal acts, and invite them to demonstrate a responsible position in this area."
