Nobel laureate Mohammadi sentenced to 7 more years in prison

Iran has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to more than seven additional years in prison, her supporters said, following new convictions handed down by a Revolutionary Court in Mashhad.

Axar.az, citing AP, reports that the ruling comes after Mohammadi began a hunger strike and amid an intensified crackdown on dissent following nationwide protests in which security forces killed thousands.

According to her lawyer, Mohammadi received six years for “gathering and collusion,” 18 months for propaganda, a two-year travel ban, and two years of internal exile. Iranian authorities have not publicly acknowledged the verdict. Mohammadi ended her hunger strike after the sentencing due to deteriorating health.

The case unfolds as Iran engages in nuclear negotiations with the United States, while senior Iranian officials strike a hard-line tone, rejecting limits on uranium enrichment. Rights groups say Mohammadi’s sentence reflects escalating repression, particularly against activists linked to the Mahsa Amini protests. Despite serious health issues, including past heart attacks and surgery, Mohammadi remains a central symbol of Iran’s pro-democracy movement.
