At the 68th meeting of the European Commission of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) held in Sofia, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan was elected a member of the organisation's Executive Council.

Axar.az was informed about this by the State Tourism Agency.

Azerbaijan, Turkiye, Israel, Albania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Italy, Lithuania, Slovakia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan put forward their candidacies for the 5 vacant seats allocated for membership in the European region.

Out of the 11 countries that put forward their candidacies in the tense elections, 4 members of the European Union (Lithuania, Czech Republic, Italy, Bulgaria) were chosen as winners, along with Azerbaijan.

Chairman of the State Tourism Agency, Fuad Naghiyev, who spoke at the meeting of the Executive Council, expressed his gratitude to everyone who participated in the voting and noted that Azerbaijan will prioritise equality and a fair approach, as always.

The chairman of the agency said that since Azerbaijan became a full member of the UN World Tourism Organization in 2001, it has expanded successful partnership and cooperation relations with member states of the organization, and will contribute to the efficiency of the work of the Executive Council in its future activities.

Fuad Nagiyev pointed out that the future of global tourism depends on the joint implementation of necessary measures.

Ambassador of Azerbaijan to the Kingdom of Spain and the Principality of Andorra, as well as Permanent Representative to the World Tourism Organization Ramiz Hasanov and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to Bulgaria Huseyn Huseynov, took part in the meeting.
