A chess tournament was held in New York City, USA, to mark the 102nd anniversary of the birth of Azerbaijan’s National Leader, Heydar Aliyev.
Axar.az reports the tournament was organized by "Chess Father," a company led by international chess master Elvin Bagir-Pour, who has worked in the United States for many years. The event was supported by the State Committee on Work with Diaspora of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
During the opening ceremony, the cherished memory of National Leader Heydar Aliyev was honored.
Elvin Bagir-Pour spoke about Heydar Aliyev’s invaluable contribution to the development of chess in Azerbaijan. He noted that the National Leader always prioritized the growth of chess in the country. It was thanks to Aliyev’s initiative that the first chess schools were established in Azerbaijan, and talented players were given opportunities to compete in various tournaments.
More than 50 athletes, aged between 5 and 60, participated in the tournament. Following the Swiss system, the players competed in six rounds, each lasting 15 minutes, under the supervision of referees. The competition featured world-renowned grandmasters Maxim Dlugy and Mark Paragua.
In the end, Mikola Bortnik took first place, Syed Ali Hayder finished second, and Teodr Pimanof secured third. The winners received trophies and cash prizes, while other participants were awarded certificates.

It is worth noting that the chess tournament, which began in honor of the 100th anniversary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev’s birth, is now being held for the third time. The tournament has been officially registered by the United States Chess Federation.
