India calls U.S. tariffs on Russian oil unfair

The U.S. customs duties imposed on India for purchasing oil from Russia are unfair and meaningless.

Axar.az reports that India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said this.

The minister pointed out that European countries’ trade with Russia is much larger than India’s, and the West is acting inconsistently on this issue:

“They tell us we are financing the Russia-Ukraine war. But Europe’s trade with Russia is higher than India-Russia trade. If your argument is about energy, Europe buys more energy.”

Jaishankar also called U.S. criticism of India “ridiculous”:

“If there’s a problem with buying oil, just don’t buy it. No one is forcing you. Europe buys, the U.S. buys. If you don’t like it, don’t buy.”

It should be noted that U.S. President Donald Trump signed a decision on August 6 to impose an additional 25% customs duty on India for continuing to purchase oil from Russia.
