Uncertainty over a possible US strike on Iran is causing concern in Azerbaijan, but Baku has not discussed the issue with Washington.
Axar.az reports that this was stated by Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration, Hikmet Hajiyev, in an interview with The National.
“The situation is unpredictable, and it will be difficult to properly assess all the threats and challenges that may arise as a result,” he said.
Hikmet Hajiyev emphasized that Azerbaijan has not conveyed these concerns to Washington:
“We are not discussing this issue with the United States, and they have never contacted us on this matter either.”
According to the presidential aide, Azerbaijani officials have held talks with their Iranian counterparts in recent days.
Hajiyev noted that the security situation in Iran does not require immediate intervention by Azerbaijan, as official Baku has always refrained from interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.
The presidential aide added that Azerbaijan, a South Caucasus country rich in energy resources, feels as if it is “squeezed between two world wars” between Iran and Russia:
“On one side, the Russia–Ukraine war continues, while at the same time there is confrontation between Israel and Iran, along with US involvement in that confrontation.”
