Neighboring Turkiye will be affected by another severe cold weather wave. The General Directorate of Meteorology has issued a yellow weather warning for 20 regions. It is reported that there is a risk of heavy rain and storms in these regions. It is interesting to note how realistic the possibility of this cold air mass reaching Azerbaijan is.
Axar.az reports that weather and climate expert Javid Huseynov said that the possibility of the severe frosty weather wave observed in Turkiye affecting Azerbaijan is quite real. However, this effect usually manifests itself a few days later and in a more mitigated form.
According to him, based on meteorological regularities and current February 2026 forecasts, this process can be analyzed as follows:
"It usually takes 48-72 hours (2-3 days) for cold air masses entering the western and central parts of Turkey to move eastward and reach Azerbaijan. In other words, the frost that began in Istanbul today will enter our country in a few days."
Javid Huseynov emphasizes that cold air masses lose some of their initial hardness and undergo transformation when crossing the mountainous terrain of Turkiye (Anatolian Plateau) and especially when encountering the Caucasus Mountains.
"The Caspian Sea plays a relatively moderating role for Baku and the Absheron Peninsula. The cold coming from Turkiye can be felt more in Nakhchivan and the western regions of the country (Ganja-Gazakh zone)."
