Iran’s rial has fallen to a record low of more than 2 million to the US dollar on the open market, according to currency-tracking websites, as the United States prepares new sanctions against Tehran.
Axar.az reports, citing CNN, that the rial’s decline comes amid a worsening economic crisis, with the International Monetary Fund expecting Iran’s economy to contract by more than 5% this year and food inflation exceeding 100%.
The rial’s devaluation is expected to make imports more expensive while making Iranian exports cheaper.
