Syrian army enters Kurdish-held al-Hassakeh after deal

The Syrian army entered the Kurdish-held city of al-Hassakeh on Feb 2 following a ceasefire and transition agreement with Kurdish-led forces.

Axar.az reports, citing DW, reports that the deal ends weeks of fighting and marks the end of the Kurds’ de facto autonomy in much of northern Syria.

Under the agreement, Kurdish Asayish forces will gradually hand over security responsibilities to the Syrian Interior Ministry, while some SDF fighters will be integrated into administrative and military institutions. Key strategic sites, including Qamishli airport, oil fields, and border crossings, will transfer to government control within 10 days.

Residents welcomed government forces, but the Kurdish communities’ future under Damascus’ rule remains uncertain. The move leaves the Druze-majority Sweida region as the only part of Syria not under direct government control.
