House Republicans rebuke Trump on Canada tariffs

Six House Republicans joined Democrats in a 219–211 vote to overturn President Trump’s tariffs on Canada, marking the first time the House has formally pushed back on his trade agenda, Axios reported.

Axar.az reports that the GOP lawmakers, Reps. Thomas Massie, Don Bacon, Kevin Kiley, Dan Newhouse, Jeff Hurd, and Brian Fitzpatrick voted to terminate Trump’s use of a national emergency declaration to impose the tariffs. Rep. Jared Golden of Maine was the only Democrat to vote against the measure.

The vote reflects growing Republican unease over Trump’s aggressive tariff strategy and signals cracks in party unity after months of alignment with the White House. Speaker Mike Johnson had previously blocked tariff disapproval votes, but that effort collapsed after a procedural revolt by a small group of Republicans.

Ahead of the vote, Trump warned that Republicans who oppose his tariffs would face political consequences in future primaries.

The resolution now moves to the Senate, where it needs only a simple majority but would likely face a presidential veto. A similar measure previously passed the Senate with bipartisan support.
