Goldman Sachs lawyer resigns after Epstein files release

Kathryn Ruemmler, Goldman Sachs’ chief legal officer and former White House counsel under President Barack Obama, resigned after her name appeared in documents related to Jeffrey Epstein that were recently released by the Department of Justice, Axios reported.

Axar.az reports that the DOJ’s Jan. 30 release included millions of pages of records tied to Epstein. Among them were emails from a “Kathy Ruemmler” referencing Epstein as “Uncle Jeffrey” and thanking him for gifts in 2018 and 2019.

Ruemmler told the Financial Times that media attention surrounding her prior work as a defense attorney had become a distraction and said she was stepping down in Goldman’s best interest. Her resignation is effective June 30.

A spokesperson for Ruemmler said she had done nothing wrong and knew Epstein in a professional capacity, sharing a client and receiving referrals during her time as a criminal defense attorney. Goldman CEO David Solomon praised her tenure and said he respected her decision to resign.

Ruemmler becomes the latest high-profile figure to step down following renewed scrutiny stemming from the DOJ’s Epstein document release.
