Attacks on Ukraine energy sites hit civilians hard in Jan

Systematic attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in January led to severe consequences for the civilian population.

Axar.az reports that this was stated in the monthly report published on Friday by the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.

According to the mission, at least 161 civilians were killed and 757 others were injured in Ukraine in January. These figures are roughly in line with the same period last year. Strikes carried out with long-range weapons, including missiles and drones, accounted for 39 percent of all casualties. Most of the victims lived in areas close to the front line. Short-range drones were identified as the main cause of civilian deaths in those areas.

The report notes that continued attacks by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in February caused widespread disruptions to electricity, heating and water supplies across Ukraine amid subzero temperatures.
