In Makhachkala, a three-story residential building partially collapsed after its foundation was washed away by floods caused by heavy rainfall. Several other buildings are also at risk of collapsing.
Axar.az reports, citing Russian media, the building on Gazoprovodnaya Street began to collapse before witnesses’ eyes, and it is possible that people were inside at the time.
Emergency Ministry (FHN) personnel are conducting evacuations as well as search-and-rescue operations.
The city administration reported that at least four more multi-story residential buildings on Aivazovsky Street remain in a potentially dangerous condition. Nearly 300 residents have already been evacuated. Some have been placed in temporary shelters where they are receiving assistance, while others are staying with relatives.
The Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the collapse.
Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding across the North Caucasus. In neighboring Chechnya, torrential rains and resulting landslides have damaged 17 bridges and destroyed dozens of houses.
