Armenian voters may face residency requirement

Armenian ruling party lawmakers have proposed a residency requirement for citizens to vote in nationwide elections and referendums.

Axar.az reports, citing Armenpress, that the draft amendments were submitted by Civil Contract MPs Arusyak Manavazyan and Alkhas Ghazaryan.

Under the proposal, Armenian citizens would be eligible to vote only if they had been physically present in Armenia for at least 183 days during the previous 365 days.

The requirement would apply as of 48 days before regular elections or referendums, and 28 days before snap parliamentary elections or a repeat vote.

The authors said the change is aimed at ensuring a stronger citizen-state connection in national elections and referendums.
