Von der Leyen: EU to step up aid for Ukraine

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union will step up support for Ukraine, including additional funding to strengthen its air defense and military capabilities, following Russia's latest overnight attack.

Axar.az reports that von der Leyen made the remarks in a post on X.

“Last night, the Russian regime once again blindly attacked civilians from the air, with over 400 drones and missiles attacking the capital,” she said, adding that Ukraine urgently needs more air defense systems and that the issue will be discussed at this week's NATO Summit in Ankara.

Von der Leyen noted that the EU had already disbursed the first €4 billion under its €90 billion loan package to strengthen Ukraine's defense with advanced drone technology.

“More is coming very soon,” she said.

She also said the EU is working to finalize its 21st sanctions package against Russia in the coming days.

“We will keep increasing the pressure until Russia ends the bloodshed,” von der Leyen added.
