The members of the Syrian People’s Assembly elected MP Abdul Hamid Akil al-Awak as the Speaker of the council after he secured a majority of 99 votes during the parliamentary session.
Axar.az reports, citing SANA, that three members submitted their candidacies for the presidency of the Assembly: Abdul Hamid Akil al-Awak, Moayad Hayel al-Qablawi, and Mohammad Ramez Koraj.
The inaugural session was attended by 206 members, with no absences recorded for the opening parliamentary meeting.
The proceedings of the first session of the People’s Assembly launched on Sunday in the presence of President Ahmad al-Sharaa, the Chairman of the Higher Judicial Committee for Elections Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad, and a number of government ministers.
