World’s oldest person Ethel Caterham turns 117

Ethel Caterham, the world’s oldest person, turned 117 on Friday and is celebrating her birthday with friends and family at a care home in Surrey, England.

Axar.az reports, citing Sky News, that Caterham, who was born in Hampshire on August 21, 1909, said she was looking forward to another year.

One of the highlights was meeting King Charles III at her care home last September, shortly after her 116th birthday.

“I look forward to seeing what next year brings,” Caterham said.

During the meeting, Caterham told the King that she remembered watching him become the Prince of Wales in 1969.

“All the girls were in love with you and wanted to marry you,” she told him.

Caterham became the world’s oldest person in May 2025 following the death of a 116-year-old Brazilian nun. She is the last surviving subject of King Edward VII, who died in 1910.

The British woman is five years younger than Jeanne Calment of France, who lived to 122 and is recognized as the oldest person ever recorded.
