Trump weighs Hegseth's future after Republican losses

US President Donald Trump has been asking advisers whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth should remain in his position following the Republican Party's heavy losses in the midterm elections.

Axar.az reports, citing CBS News, that Trump has not made a decision on whether to replace Hegseth.

Some White House aides have suggested that part of the blame for the electoral defeat could fall on Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, and General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, both of whom played key roles in shaping military policy during the war with Iran.

Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been floated as a possible replacement for Hegseth, one source told CBS News. The proposal envisages his Senate confirmation before his term as governor expires on January 5.

Vice President JD Vance has blamed the war with Iran for the Republicans' electoral defeat, saying: “The reason we lost is the war.”
