The Iranian government has begun constructing fences along its eastern borders to reduce security risks.

Axar.az reports, citing Brigade General Ahmad Ali Qoudarzi of the Iranian army, that "the most problematic areas concerning military and security issues are the borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan. 80% of the drug flow into Iran comes from here."

According to him, the purpose of the project is to combat the illegal circulation of narcotics, as well as to prevent the smuggling of fuel and other goods and to fight illegal immigration: "Construction of walls has already started in the Sistan and Baluchestan and Razavi Khorasan provinces. The next phase will involve strengthening the barriers along the western borders in the Ilam, Kurdistan, and West Azerbaijan provinces."
