President Isaac Herzog has canceled his planned visit to the COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, his office announced on Saturday.
Axar.az reports that citing Times of Israel, the decision was attributed to “security considerations” following a situational assessment.
Despite Herzog's absence, the conference, which began on November 11, is being attended by three Israeli ministers from the environmental protection, energy, and transportation ministries, along with dozens of officials.
Israel’s delegation to the COP29 climate conference in Baku is operating under tight security due to its geographic proximity to Iran, despite Azerbaijan being viewed as a strong ally of Israel.
Similar to previous COP conferences, Israel has set up a pavilion at the event. This year, the pavilion includes a dedicated section highlighting the plight of Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
