A Turkish Defense Ministry delegation met with Syrian officials in Damascus to discuss defense, security, and counterterrorism efforts, focusing on terrorist organizations.
Axar.az, citing Asharq Al-Awsat, reports that Zeki Akturk, the ministry’s public relations and media advisor, confirmed the meeting at a press briefing, emphasizing Turkiye’s continued support for the Syrian people. He noted that parts of Syria remain under terrorist control, including the YPG-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Turkiye considers an extension of the PKK.
While Turkiye opposes the YPG, the US supports them in fighting ISIS.
Akturk reaffirmed Turkiye’s commitment to countering threats from the PKK, PYD, YPG (SDF), and ISIS, vowing to prevent terrorist groups from establishing control in the region. He also stressed Turkiye’s goal of working with Syria’s administration to enhance security and ensure the safe return of Syrian refugees.
A Turkish Defense Ministry official added that the delegation discussed further cooperation and that future talks would be held as Syria’s government becomes fully operational.
This visit marks the first high-level military discussions between Turkiye and Syria on defense and counterterrorism.
