The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) is closing its Southern Africa office in Johannesburg due to major aid cuts from the Trump administration.
Axar.az, citing the Guardian, reports that the WFP, which received half of its $8.8 billion budget from the US last year, will consolidate its southern and east Africa operations into a single regional office in Nairobi, Kenya.
The move comes as the Trump administration slashes 90% of USAID’s foreign aid contracts, cutting $60 billion in humanitarian funding. Southern Africa, already suffering from its worst drought in decades, faces worsening food insecurity, with 27 million people at risk of hunger.
Despite the restructuring, the WFP insists its commitment to vulnerable communities remains unchanged. Other UN agencies, including the International Organization for Migration and UNFPA, are also assessing the impact of US aid cuts, with job losses and program reductions expected globally.
