Today marks the commemoration of Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh, one of the founders of the first democratic republic in the East – the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
Axar.az reports that Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh was born on January 31, 1884, in the Novkhani village of Baku.
At a young age, he participated in the establishment of the "Hummat" organization alongside social democrats. Facing persecution from the Tsarist regime, he emigrated to Iran in 1909, where he worked for a while as the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Iran-e Now". After the suppression of the Constitutional Revolution, he moved to Turkiye.
In 1911, he became a member of the Musavat Party and was elected chairman of its Central Committee four years later. In 1918, together with Fatali Khan Khoyski and others, he officially declared the establishment of the first republic in the East.
After the Bolshevik occupation on April 28, 1920, he was arrested. Shortly after, he was released on Stalin’s orders and taken to Moscow. Despite Stalin’s insistence, he refused to cooperate with the Soviet authorities and went into exile.
Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh passed away on March 6, 1955, in Ankara and was buried in the Asri Cemetery.
On December 24, 1992, Azerbaijani President Abulfaz Elchibey signed a decree on "The return of the family members of the prominent public and political figure Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh, who were subjected to repression under the totalitarian Soviet regime, to Azerbaijan and the resolution of their social and living conditions."
On December 29, 1993, Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev signed a decree on celebrating the 110th anniversary of Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh's birth.
On November 22, 2013, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev issued a decree on the celebration of Rasulzadeh’s 130th anniversary. Based on the decree, a series of jubilee events were held both in Azerbaijan and abroad.
In 2018, to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, President Ilham Aliyev declared the year as the "Year of the Republic."
On December 30, 2023, President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on celebrating the 140th anniversary of Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh.
Additionally, Rasulzadeh's grave was renovated last year.
