The G7 foreign ministers are meeting in Canada

The G7 foreign ministers are meeting in Canada amid rising tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump, particularly over his approach to Ukraine and trade policies.

Axar.az reports that the talks, held in La Malbaie, Quebec, focus on U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent discussions with Ukraine in Saudi Arabia regarding a potential 30-day ceasefire. However, drafting a unified G7 statement has been challenging due to the U.S.'s opposition to certain language in Ukraine and Russia.

Trump’s administration has taken a less supportive stance toward Ukraine, urging a swift peace deal while pressuring European allies to take on more responsibility. Additionally, Washington's 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports have strained relations, prompting retaliation from Canada and the EU. Trump has even suggested reviving the G8 by reinstating Russia and has joked about annexing Canada, further worsening ties.

European diplomats are closely observing Rubio’s influence on U.S. foreign policy, as Trump has involved various non-State Department officials in key negotiations. Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Joly has vowed to challenge the U.S. on tariffs, while Japan and other allies navigate uncertainties in their relationship with Washington.
