The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, welcomed the statements of Azerbaijan and Armenia on the completion of negotiations on the draft peace agreement.

Axar.az reports that A. Berset recalled that when both countries became members of the Council of Europe in 2001, they committed to working towards peaceful cooperation.

“This draft agreement is evidence of the will of both member states to realize this potential and create a stable and lasting peace in the region. It is now very important to maintain this momentum and ensure the smooth completion of this process, following the Statute of the Council of Europe, in the spirit of good-neighborly relations and with full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries.

The Council of Europe fully supports the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and will continue its support and assistance to both member states, in particular to ensure full respect for human rights, democracy, and the rule of law,” he said.

In addition, the European official wrote that achieving peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan would be a great achievement for Aliyev and Pashinyan.
