The site of the historic Petra monuments in Jordan was unexpectedly hit by floodwaters. About 1,800 foreign tourists who were there at the time of the incident were evacuated, and access to the area was temporarily suspended.
Axar.az reports that torrential rains that have been falling in the southern provinces of the country since Sunday evening have caused floods in the valleys.
As a result of the natural disaster, two Belgian tourists - a mother and son - went missing in the Shobak province, 205 kilometers south of the capital Amman, where the Petra monuments are located. The lifeless bodies of the tourists were found today after a long search.
The city of Petra, famous for its rock-cut buildings, is located 225 kilometers south of Amman. The city was built in 312 BC as the capital of the ancient Nabataean state.
