Malta's Prime Minister, Robert Abela, has announced that his country will recognize the independence of Palestine soon.
Axar.az reports that Malta already has a Palestinian ambassador and in 2024 the country sponsored a UN General Assembly resolution recognizing the right of Palestine to become a full member of the organization, but has not yet officially declared the recognition of the Palestinian state.
According to Abela, the statement will be made on June 20 at an international conference organized by Saudi Arabia and France with the support of the UN. Representatives of the Maltese authorities have made it clear that they will not be the only country to recognize Palestine at the conference.
Axios wrote that France also intends to recognize the independence of Palestine in June. French President Emmanuel Macron spoke in April 2025 of plans to make such a statement "in the coming months".
It should be noted that in 2024, Norway, Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia announced their recognition of the independence of Palestine.
