The European Union will introduce an age-verification app in July 2025 to better enforce online protections for minors.
Axar.az reports that the app, which verifies users’ ages without disclosing personal data, is a precursor to the EU’s upcoming digital identity wallet.
Although no unified age-check law exists, platforms are legally required to protect minors from harmful or pornographic content. The new tool will support tougher enforcement against companies failing to manage risks effectively.
EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen urged tech giants like Meta and TikTok to adopt stronger child-safety measures voluntarily, warning that their addictive designs are under investigation and could result in fines.
Brussels also aims to ensure children’s accounts are private by default to prevent unwanted contact and reduce platform-induced addiction. Separately, the EU is probing four major adult content sites over inadequate age verification practices.
