According to the UN's migration agency, over 230,000 Afghans have left Iran since the beginning of June 2025, with nearly 132,000 returning in just the last week.
Axar.az reports that this surge comes as Iran sets a deadline of July 6 for undocumented Afghan nationals to leave, prompting a rise in deportations.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that since January, more than 691,000 Afghans have returned, 70% of them forcibly. The daily return rate has now reached 30,000 and is expected to rise further as the deadline approaches.
Unlike previous waves, most recent returnees are families—not just single men—bringing all their belongings home. Taliban officials have called for a "dignified return," but Afghanistan struggles to handle the influx amid dwindling international aid and limited resources.
The UN warns that instability from the Israel-Iran conflict and host country policy shifts are accelerating returns and placing immense pressure on Afghanistan’s fragile humanitarian system.
