US President Donald Tramp signed a resolution recognizing the Israeli occupation of Golan Heights in 1967 as Israel's territory a few days ago. The decision was not met unequivocally by countries and international organizations. The UN Security Council's decision on the Golan Heights did not change their position on the status of these territories.
Here is an interview of Axar.az about this topic with Dr. Theodor Karasikin, a political analyst at the US Center for Lock Analytics:
- Why Trump recognized Israel's claim on the Golan Heights? Is it hope for being re-elected?
- The Trump move must be seen in the larger geopolitical context as shifts occur in the region. The Golan move is part of implementing the Kushner plan adjure and defacto. The interpretation is that there will be a lot of rhetoric but no real action and guarantees Netanyahu re-election. Putting the issue in front of the UN, of course, will garner a reaction which will be used to push back against the US plan.
- What will be the reaction of Arab countries? Will they be able to change anything?
Syria’s lead on this issue and those that back them will be facing counter charges of chemical agent use. This debate is likely to not lead to anything that will affect the Trump course especially in the time between the release of the Mueller report findings and the actual release of the full report if it is made completely public. This domestic component drives much of the Trump policy now and the immediate victory is being taken advantage of to even push harder the countries in the region to adhere to the White House vision.
- The head of Hezbollah called for resistance against the US decision. Can that conflict create bigger problems or terror acts?
- As time passes we may very well see how Israel and Syria will be contending with the territorial issue and whether or not extremist will tie themselves to this act by the White House. Christchurch is probably a higher rallying call then Golan and people need to think about how those are tied together in the minds of jihadists or not or in the minds of those who have been afflicted by policies surrounding land seized in the 1967 war.
