The statements made by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on the X platform regarding the so-called “Armenian genocide” of 1915, as well as what were described as unfounded and biased remarks about Azerbaijan’s efforts to restore its territorial integrity and sovereignty, have been met with strong protests from Azerbaijanis around the world.
Axar.az reports that a petition has been launched on the initiative of the Azerbaijan–America Youth Federation in order to ensure the correct informing of the international community and an objective approach by international organizations.
Azerbaijanis worldwide have expressed serious concern over the New York mayor’s post about Azerbaijan by supporting this petition.
The petition states that at a time when the United States supports a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia and important steps are being taken toward normalization of relations, such biased approaches raise concern. It is noted that, according to the latest assessment by a UN mission sent to Karabakh on October 2, 2023, no cases of violence against civilians were observed and no evidence of damage to civilian infrastructure was found in those areas. It is also emphasized that during the 44-day Patriotic War, several Azerbaijani cities, including Ganja, Barda, and Tartar, were subjected to missile and artillery fire, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. In addition, attention is drawn to the Khojaly genocide of February 1992, described as one of the most severe tragedies of humanity, in which hundreds of Azerbaijani civilians were allegedly killed.
Finally, the petition calls for an objective stance based on the UN Charter, UN Security Council resolutions, general principles of international law, and historical facts.
It is noted that Azerbaijanis worldwide can join the petition via the provided link.
It is also noted that the United States, Canada, Israel, the United Kingdom, and several European countries—including Germany, Finland, Spain, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Sweden, Greece, and others—as well as 17 coordination councils uniting 44 countries, have issued statements opposing the New York mayor’s alleged unfounded accusations against Azerbaijan, and have sent protest letters to U.S. President Donald Trump and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
