Tehran accuses Washington of distorting truth about 9/11

Iran's Foreign Minister has tweeted a scathing response to a document released by the CIA which had originated with the terrorist network al-Qaeda, which claims that Tehran supported the group before the deadly terror attacks on the US in September 2001.

Axar.az reports citing Sputnik that, in a tweet on Thursday, Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said that by accusing the Islamic Republic, Washington is trying to "whitewash" the US allies' role in the 9/11 attacks.

Zarif's remarks came after the CIA published about 47,000 classified documents, including an al-Qaeda, reported which, in particular, claimed that "anyone who wants to strike America, Iran is ready to support him and help him with their frank and clear rhetoric."

Earlier, a US government commission investigating the 9/11 attacks claimed that Iranian officials allegedly met al-Qaeda leaders in Sudan between 1991 and 1992, according to Iran's Press TV news agency.

The commission, however, turned a blind eye to the fact that 15 of the 19 terrorists involved in the 9/11 attacks were Saudi nationals, Press TV noted.

It also recalled that Iran is due to pay 7.5 billion dollars in damages to the families of the 9/11 victims, in line with a New York court decision.

During an interview with Fox News back in 2010, then-US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in an apparent reference to al-Qaeda, admitted that "the people we are fighting today we funded them 20 years ago… and we did it because we were locked in a struggle with the Soviet Union."
