On December 2, during the 114th session of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), the committee rapporteur for Armenia, Yeung Kam John, reported that information had been received about the erection of a statue in Armenia dedicated to Garegin Nzhdeh, a figure who collaborated with the fascist regime and committed crimes against humanity.
Axar.az reports that the committee also questioned how Armenia’s school curriculum takes into account all aspects of history and promotes an environment of tolerance without discrimination.
Vahan Kostanyan, the head of the Armenian delegation, and Deputy Foreign Minister, who tried to prove that his country was a bastion of tolerance, acknowledged the weight of the question and was forced to state that the school curriculum was being revised. V. Kostanyan, who even refrained from mentioning G. Nzhdeh's name, could not deny that Nzhdeh was a fascist by saying that the mentioned person was an important historical figure for Armenia and the Armenian people at the beginning of the 20th century, and not later.
Not satisfied with this response, rapporteur Yeung Kam John emphasized that the recent ceremonies held around such a statue indicated that the individual in question remains relevant to society today.
