We are currently witnessing how Turkiye has followed a sound strategy from the very beginning. Turkiye initially supported the new government, presenting it as the voice of the people and a victory for democracy.

Axar.az reports that Political analyst Turab Rzayev expressed these views in his commentary on the latest developments in Syria.

He mentioned that when Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) captured Aleppo, a connection was established between Turkiye and the new government, and this contact strengthened further when Damascus was taken:

"Turkiye played a significant role in ensuring the new government did not escalate tensions, avoided provoking relations, and refrained from responding to Israel’s provocative actions. The new government, under this guidance, tried to maintain normal relations with Israel, indicated a willingness to oppose Iran, and while taking a stance against Russia, maintained diplomatic ties. At the same time, it thwarted the Alawite-Nusayri uprising that Iran and Russia sought to instigate in Latakia. Although there were skirmishes in PKK-controlled areas, there was no outright attack or confrontation with the U.S. This contributed to the stabilization and normalization of the new government. As a result, we now see the foreign ministers of France and Germany visiting Damascus and meetings with Jolani (Ahmad al-Sharaa)."

He drew attention to the EU’s condition for the new government:

"The EU set the condition that if Russian bases were removed, they would cooperate with the new government. Soon, the EU is expected to allocate financial aid. Subsequently, the U.S. will also be compelled to provide assistance.

Additionally, we must highlight the U.S. efforts to deter Israel’s actions and halt its attacks in the region. This can be seen as a positive achievement of the new government. Essentially, the meetings of the new government with the foreign ministers of both France and Germany indicate its de facto recognition."

Rzayev also touched on future developments:

"Turkiye will make maximum efforts to return the territories held by the PKK to Syrian state control. Steps have already been taken in this regard. The PKK has subordinated its armed forces in these areas to the national army and signaled its willingness to comply as well. However, they are trying to maintain internal autonomy, which Turkiye will strongly oppose. Additionally, Turkiye will prevent any provocations by the Alawites instigated by Iran and Russia.

For years, Turkiye sought normalization through the Astana format with both Russia and Iran, but these countries failed to take meaningful steps toward normalization. Turkiye and the new Syrian government are likely to achieve this goal. Gradually, territories controlled by the PKK and the Alawites in Latakia will also be recaptured. Thus, full control over Syria will be restored, which will be regarded as a significant achievement for Turkiye."
