Starting from August 1 of this year, the export of Azerbaijani natural gas to Syria via the Kilis pipeline through Turkiye will commence.
Axar.az reports that the new energy line—considered an important step in Syria’s reconstruction—is planned to be commissioned on August 1. Azerbaijani natural gas will be delivered to Syria through Turkiye via the Kilis route. The project aims to contribute both to the restoration of Syria’s damaged electricity infrastructure and to Turkiye’s goal of becoming a regional energy hub.
It is reported that preparations for gas transmission have been completed under a recently signed agreement between SOCAR and Syria. In the first phase, the plan is to supply 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year to Syria. The gas will pass through the Turkish border city of Kilis and reach power plants in Aleppo and Homs, where it will be used for electricity generation. The project targets a power output capacity of approximately 1,200–1,300 megawatts.
It should be noted that on July 12, during the business visit of Syria’s Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaan to Azerbaijan, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between SOCAR and the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic.
The memorandum was signed by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy and Chairman of SOCAR’s Supervisory Board, Mikayil Jabbarov, and Syria’s Minister of Energy, Mohammad al-Bashir.
