Georgia will receive gas from Azerbaijan at a social tariff for the next 20 years, and we must express special gratitude to the Azerbaijani side for this, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said.
Axar.az reports that Kobakhidze made the remarks during a briefing at the government administration.
The prime minister said several important agreements were signed during his recent visit to Azerbaijan.
“The first area concerns gas imports and transit from Azerbaijan. The extension of the social gas contract was particularly important. This agreement had been signed for 20 years and was due to expire by the end of the year. Extending it for another 20 years is especially important for our country and our people. Gas will be supplied to Georgia at a social tariff over the next 20 years. Of course, we must express special gratitude to the Azerbaijani side for this,” he said.
Kobakhidze added that Georgia has also achieved strong results in electricity imports and transit.
He did not disclose the details of the agreement, calling it a commercial secret:
“If it were not a commercial secret, the major benefits this agreement brings to our country and society would be much clearer to the public. We have also achieved very good results in the electricity sector, which are highly beneficial for the country and society.
As for the Baku–Tbilisi–Supsa pipeline, it has been completely inactive for the past three years. As a result, the country has been losing potential revenue. After months of negotiations, we reached an agreement with the Azerbaijani side to resume the pipeline’s operation.
Our country will receive tens of millions of lari in revenue each year from this. These are very favorable terms that we agreed on with the Azerbaijani side. This is also a commercial secret.”
