UN negotiations have resumed in Geneva to finalize a global treaty on plastic pollution after talks failed last year. Countries remain divided—some want to limit plastic production and ban toxic chemicals, while oil-producing nations prefer focusing on waste management.

Axar.az reports that over 400 million tons of plastic are produced each year, with only 9% recycled.

A recent report warns plastic pollution poses serious health and economic risks, costing $1.5 trillion annually.

Despite challenges, negotiators and over 600 NGOs are hopeful a deal can be reached by the end of 2024 to combat the crisis and move toward a plastic-free future.
