UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer praised what he described as a significant breakthrough in Ukraine’s security as former U.S. President Donald Trump pledged firm guarantees to support Kyiv.
Axar.az, citing BBC, reports that Starmer, who cut short his family holiday to join the White House summit, described the outcomes as evidence of real progress, noting the movement toward high-level talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Chairing a follow-up virtual summit with European and Commonwealth allies, Starmer emphasized the importance of unity and “gratitude diplomacy,” particularly in his support of Trump’s efforts.
Despite concerns among European officials about potential risks in the talks, especially if Trump perceived Ukraine or its European allies as inflexible, the summit concluded with a strong display of cohesion among Western leaders — a message carefully crafted to avoid giving Russia any strategic advantage.
Trump’s decision not to publicly pressure Zelensky on territorial concessions — a key sensitivity — was welcomed in London.
While some leaders, including Germany’s Friedrich Merz and France’s Emmanuel Macron, advocated for a ceasefire before peace talks, Trump and the US administration prefer to move directly toward a political settlement.
