Oil tankers registered in Greece have been spotted in Russian ports. These ships contribute to oil exports from Russia.

According to the Marinetraffic service, another Greek tanker, the Irini, is currently off the coast of St. Petersburg.

Russia evades sanctions through a “shadow fleet. The ships of this fleet are registered in countries that are not members of the EU. Often, the real owners of the “shadow fleet” ships are hidden behind a complex chain of companies. However, as confirmed by maritime experts from Traficom, the oil tankers currently in the Baltic Sea are registered in Greece. This does not mean that the ships violate European sanctions.

The transportation of Russian oil under the EU flag is allowed if several conditions are met. "First, Greek tankers cannot transport Russian oil to European Union countries. Second, the price of the cargo transported must be below the established price ceiling."
