Bulgaria enters eurozone as instability persists

Bulgaria will adopt the euro on January 1 after receiving final approval from Brussels, despite having no functioning government, no approved state budget, and ongoing public protests.

Axar.az, citing Italian scenari economici, reports that the European Commission has confirmed that all legal and technical requirements have been met, making the process effectively irreversible.

EU institutions argue that political instability is an internal matter and does not affect euro accession once the convergence criteria are fulfilled.

Domestically, Bulgaria faces a power vacuum, repeated budget delays, and last-minute but unlikely attempts by opposition parties to postpone accession.

Critics warn that joining the euro without a budget will severely limit fiscal flexibility during the transition and could amplify economic shocks. Nonetheless, EU authorities treat the change largely as a technical operation, prioritizing monetary integration over democratic consent or political stability, reinforcing the perception that euro adoption proceeds independently of national political realities.
