U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order threatening tariffs on goods from any country that sells or supplies oil to Cuba, a move that could deepen the island’s worsening energy crisis.
Axar.az reports that the measure puts particular pressure on Mexico, which has been a key oil supplier to Cuba while also trying to maintain stable relations with Washington, according to AP.
Cuba strongly condemned the order, calling it economic coercion, while Mexico has given mixed signals about whether it will continue shipments, citing contractual and sovereign decisions. The policy adds to regional uncertainty as Cuba struggles with fuel shortages and as Latin American countries weigh the risk of U.S. tariff retaliation.
