Afghanistan-Pakistan border clashes escalate

Afghanistan launched retaliatory attacks on Pakistan following Pakistani airstrikes on Afghan border areas, claiming to have captured more than a dozen Pakistani army posts.

Axar.az, citing AP, reports that explosions and aircraft sounds were reported in Kabul hours later, though casualty details there remain unclear.

Afghan officials, including spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, said operations targeted Pakistani military bases along the Durand Line.

Deputy spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat claimed up to 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed, with some bodies taken into Afghanistan and several soldiers captured. Pakistan disputed these figures, reporting two soldiers killed and three wounded, while claiming 36 Afghan fighters were killed. Pakistani authorities denied any soldiers were captured.

Fighting also occurred near the Torkham border crossing, prompting evacuations of refugee camps on both sides. Mortars from Afghanistan landed in Pakistani villages, but no civilian casualties were reported.

Tensions remain high along the 2,611-km Durand Line, with a history of deadly clashes, previous airstrikes, and unresolved ceasefire agreements.

Pakistan cites threats from the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) and Baloch separatist groups operating from Afghan territory as reasons for its cross-border strikes.
