Nikitin: No concessions planned on Armenian railways

Russia is not negotiating with Kazakhstan over the management of Armenia’s railways.

Axar.az reports, citing Armenian media, Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin said: “I can say that, firstly, we do not plan to grant any concessions to anyone. Secondly, our colleagues and partners in Armenia have not discussed these issues with us at the official level.”

It should be mentioned that in February 2008, Armenia signed an agreement transferring the management of its railway system to South Caucasus Railways, a subsidiary of Russian Railways.

The contract is valid for 30 years with an option for a ten-year extension.

In December 2025, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan requested that Russian partners quickly restore sections of the railway leading to the Turkish and Azerbaijani borders, necessary for the “Trump Route” transport project between Armenia and the U.S.

Earlier in March, Pashinyan said Armenia had discussed transferring railway management to countries such as Kazakhstan, the UAE, or Qatar. On March 26, he expressed hope that Russia and Armenia would reach an agreement to transfer management to Kazakh authorities.
