Nizar Amedi wins Iraqi presidential election

Nizar Amedi has been elected as Iraq’s new president after winning a second round of parliamentary voting.

Axar.az reports, citing Iraqi media, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan candidate secured victory with 227 votes against rival Muthanna Amin.

Amedi previously served as Iraq’s environment minister between 2022 and 2024 and has held senior positions within the party.

Former President Abdul Latif Rashid withdrew from the race before the vote, saying he wanted to avoid deeper political polarization and preserve national unity.
