NATO chief Rutte and Merz among few with access to Trump

The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he is one of the few politicians who currently has good access to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Axar.az reports, citing German media, Merz made the remarks at a reception of the Association of German Banks in Berlin.

“I try to maintain a good personal relationship [with Trump], knowing that we have different responsibilities.”

Merz added that he and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte are probably currently the only ones who can speak with Trump in a “relatively trusting” and good way stating that “Others, for whatever reason, may have more problems with him.”

The chancellor stressed that the head of the German government must seek workable relations with any U.S. president.

Merz further noted that he has access to Trump, “at least when the doors are closed,” but said communication remains difficult.
