The United Kingdom will support Ukraine’s energy sector for the next two years and unveil a fresh package of sanctions as Prime Minister Keir Starmer intensifies backing for Kyiv amid the ongoing war.
Axar.az informs, citing the British government, that the announcement comes as the G7 summit begins in Evian, France, where leaders are expected to focus on security guarantees for Ukraine and broader European stability. Starmer is set to tell allies that the group must go further to ensure Ukraine achieves a “just and lasting peace.”
“Russia’s aggression threatens not just Ukraine, but the security of all Europe,” Starmer said. “That is why the UK is stepping up – choking off the revenues that fuel Putin’s war and powering Ukraine through the winters ahead.”
He added that Britain would continue supporting Ukraine “for as long as it takes,” urging Russia to “end its barbaric strikes and come to the negotiating table.”
As part of the package, the UK will provide £210 million (approximately $280 million) in financing through UK Export Finance to support the supply of enriched uranium for Ukraine’s nuclear power plants over the next two years. The fuel will be supplied by the UK-based company Urenco to Ukraine’s state nuclear operator Energoatom.
The deal was agreed during a meeting last week between Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Downing Street.
Officials said the arrangement also supports UK industry, with a significant share of uranium processing taking place in the UK and thousands of jobs linked to Urenco’s operations and supply chain.
The financing builds on an earlier two-year agreement to supply nuclear fuel to Ukraine.
